MINUTES-General Meetings

General Meeting – 6 December 2011

Women’s Day Alliance met in Raible Chapel on Tuesday, December 6, 2011. President Kathy Calhoun called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM with opening words of inspiration followed by the lighting of the chalice by Edna Davis.

President Calhoun reported a WDA profit from the Crafty Bake Sale of about $801.00. She thanked all who helped to set up or sell or buy the baked goods or crafts. A special thanks was extended to Joan Janak who sent two scarves to be sold.

Recording Secretary Karen McClendon read the minutes of the November meeting which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lenna Webb gave the bank balance of $2,605.43.  Unfortunately, the bank is still tacking a fee onto our account each month so that issue still needs to be resolved.

President Calhoun thanked Lenna for uploading the minutes and the financial report to the WDA website.

Membership Chairman Ginny Lombardi introduced our guests. Thirty-four members, 2 guests and the speaker were present.

Susan Grundy, Co-program Committee chair, reminded members of upcoming speakers.

Luncheon Committee Chair Barbara Powell thanked the hostesses for today’s catered luncheon – Nina Bell, Judy Smith and Lenna Webb. She stressed the importance of responding to email or telephone meeting notices. This will be especially important for the next meeting as the notice will come between Christmas and New Year’s Day, an especially busy week.

Sara Miskimins, Service Committee Chairman, thanked those who brought items or gave checks for the Rainbow Room, a program of Community Partners of Dallas.

She reminded members that they can still purchase a box of ten UUSC cards for $10.00.

We’re all set for about 8 or 9 holiday deliveries and visits to selected church members.

The $27.00 or so overage from the collection to buy supplies for Dan D. Rogers’ students will be given to their library for the purchase of books.

Check the DU for opportunities for many continuing service projects.

Corresponding Secretary Yvonne Norfleet has sent a thank you card to Fran Tynan, our November speaker, and a sympathy card to the family of Bette Schleier as well as a best wishes card to Loyse Whisman as she settles into her new living arrangements.

Publicity Chairman Nina Bell said that she’s all set up with reminders to get the announcements to the church office in time for publication deadlines.

Bridge Chairman Genie Fritz reminded players that the December meeting will be a special luncheon prepared by Ann Wilbur who has sent invitations to those on the bridge list.

Friendship Chairman Marjorie Niemann announced a special December treat – a trip to the Arboretum with a tour of the DeGolyer home followed by lunch. Members who are interested may sign up as guests of those who have Arboretum memberships.

Community Liaison Jana Blackburn reminded members of the DMA’s special exhibit which runs through February 12, 2012.

President Calhoun closed the meeting at 11:00 with an inspirational reading.

Program Chairman Patty Jantho introduced our speaker, Dr. John Mears, SMU History Professor, who spoke on “Living on the Hinge of History.”Dr. Mears’ illuminating talk ended with a brief question and answer period.

The meeting adjourned for the Christmas luncheon at 12:00 noon.

General Meeting – 1 November 2011

 

Women’s Day Alliance met in Raible Chapel on Tuesday, November 1, 2011. President Kathy Calhoun called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM, and following the lighting of the chalice by Alice Johnson, read words of inspiration.

After learning that the Board suggested that the minutes not be read at meetings since they’re available online and as hard copies at each meeting, members discussed whether or not the reading is beneficial. Jeanne Clinchy moved that the minutes of the past meeting should be read. The motion was seconded and passed by a slim margin.

Recording Secretary Karen McClendon read the minutes of the October meeting as well as a thank you note from Hearts and Hammers.

Treasurer Lenna Webb gave the bank balance of $2,963.22. She was able to get the bank charges revoked but said the process must be repeated each year.

First Vice President/Membership Chairman Ginny Lombardi reported that 31 members, 1 guest and the speaker were present.

Patty Jantho, Co-program Committee chair, reminded members that the always thought-provoking John Mears will be our December speaker.

Luncheon Committee Chair Barbara Powell thanked the hostesses for today’s catered luncheon – Edna Davis, Jana Blackburn and Karen McClendon with special thanks to Jo Hogue who provided the Mexican pots around which the hostesses planned the table decorations.

Sara Miskimins, Service Committee Chairman, passed a sign-up sheet so members could a) list anyone who might enjoy a holiday visit and b) sign up to make one of the visits.

Sara also reminded members that a collection to benefit the Rainbow Room will be taken in December.

Corresponding Secretary Yvonne Norfleet has sent a thank you card to Mary Mel French, our September speaker.

President Calhoun spoke for the Telephone Chairman, saying that from now on, Vee Shine will call those on her list one time only. Lenna Webb added that she will call anyone who gets the email notice but doesn’t open it.

Friendship Chairman Marjorie Niemann invited all to meet in Channing on November 22nd for an opportunity to deepen WDA friendships. Call Peggy Cargile if you plan on attending.

Bring a sandwich. Drinks and dessert are provided.

Movie maven Sara Miskimins announced that the 4th Tuesday movie group will meet on the 5th Tuesday this month because of Thanksgiving.

Community Liaison Jana Blackburn listed several opportunities for entertainment, among them:

·        DMA - Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. – through February 12, 2012

·        The Meadows Museum (SMU campus) houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside of Spain.

The second Prado-Meadows partnership features The Magdalene (1641) by Jusepe de Ribera – through January 15, 2012

In other business, the November 20th Crafty Bake Sale was discussed, and a sign-up sheet for workers was passed. Members were urged to sign up to bring items for sale and to work either on set-up Saturday or during one of the Sunday shifts. Members were reminded that all baked goods should be “from scratch.”

President Calhoun announced that Chalice Art jewelry will be for sale on November 13th. A percentage of the proceeds will go to the Youth Department for the Coming of Age Boston trip and the YRUU Service trip.

The business session ended at 11:00.

Patty Jantho introduced our speaker, Fran Tynan, Director of Resolana, a non-profit organization that provides rehabilitative programming for incarcerated women.

Mrs. Tynan’s informative program ended with a question and answer period.

The meeting adjourned for a catered luncheon at 12:00 noon.

General Meeting – 4 October 2011

 

Women’s Day Alliance met in Raible Chapel on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. President Kathy Calhoun called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM with inspirational words and a welcome to all present, especially new members and guests.

President Calhoun thanked ULink workers Barbara Powell, Nina Bell and Ginny Lombardi. She complimented Judy Smith and Lenna Webb for a very good directory and called on Karen McClendon to read the minutes of the September 6th meeting.

Treasurer Lenna Webb reported a bank balance of $3,489.67. Her complete report is filed with the minutes.

First Vice President/Membership Chairman Ginny Lombardi introduced new member, Jo Lynn Robichaux. Thirty-six members and five guests were present.

Patty Jantho, Co-program Committee chair, reminded members of the speakers for our November and December meetings.

Luncheon Committee Chair Barbara Powell thanked the hostesses for today’s catered luncheon – Peggy Cargile, Patty Jantho and Yvonne Norfleet.

Corresponding Secretary Yvonne Norfleet has sent cards to Charlise Hill-Larson, Lenna Webb and Loyse Whisman who’s now at The Forum.

Telephone Chairman Vee Shine mentioned that two members have incorrect phone numbers listed. Lenna Webb added that six or seven members didn’t respond to emails so Barbara Powell had to call them to see if they planned to come today.

Bridge Chairman Genie Fritz reminded members that bridge begins at 10:00 on October 11th. Bring a sandwich. Snacks and drinks will be provided by the hostesses.

Friendship Chairman Marjorie Niemann invited all to meet on October 18th in the home of Valerie Adams, Barbara Powell’s daughter, for an opportunity to deepen WDA friendships.

Community Liaison Jana Blackburn listed several opportunities for entertainment:

·        The Tempest is being presented at the Wyly Theater.

·        The State Fair of Texas runs through October 23rd. Thursdays are free for seniors.

The Arboretum’s “Cinderella’s Pumpkin Village” will be open until the day before Thanksgiving. Concerts are held on Thursday evenings. 

President Calhoun closed the business session at 10:55.

Barbara Powell introduced our speaker, Mary Mel French, Chief of Protocol during the Clinton Administration and author of United States Protocol, the Guide to Official Diplomatic Etiquette.

Mrs. French’s program ended with questions and answers.

The meeting was adjourned for a catered luncheon at 12:00 noon.

General Meeting – 6 September 2011

 President Kathy Calhoun called the meeting to order at 10:35 AM, beginning with an appropriate reading followed by a report of her attendance at the recent meeting of the Unitarian Universalist Association where our WDA website received much positive recognition. President Calhoun, who with three other women served on a panel discussion sponsored by the UU Women’s Federation, reported that our WDA was also recognized for holding this church together during the depression and for the active role some members played in Roe vs Wade. Our auxiliary groups, such as bridge, friendship and movies, were also noted.

The minutes of the May 10th meeting were approved as read.

Treasurer Lenna Webb reported a bank balance of $3,385.69. Income from May 3 to September 6 is $1,450.00, mostly from membership with $275.00 coming from contributions.  Expenses during this period were $874.33, including $800.00 in donations. The bank has charged $57.00 in service charges that Lenna intends to reclaim.

First Vice President/Membership Chairman Ginny Lombardi introduced two new WDA members, Ellen Solender and Jeanette Richardson, bringing out total membership to 54.

Visitor Paula Rose invited WDA members to attend the WEA meeting on the evening of September 13th in Channing Hall for an evening of fun and fellowship. After a potluck buffet, Mary Sue Foster will present “Never Meet a Stranger – Appreciative Inquiry.” A highlight of the evening will be the celebration of Mrs. Raible’s 90th birthday.

The Program Committee members deferred to Barbara Powell to announce the speaker for our October meeting – the Honorable Mary Mel French, former Ambassador of Protocol for the United State during the Clinton administration and author of United States Protocol: The Guide to Official Diplomatic Etiquette.

As Luncheon Committee Chair, Barbara continued, thanking those who served with her as hostesses for today’s potluck luncheon – Peggy Cargile, Martha Durst, Susan Grundy, Patty Jantho, Sara Miskimins and Pamela Townsend.

Table decorations are the books and supplies that will go to Dan D. Rogers Elementary.

Barbara also explained the need to purchase new tablecloths and plates for WDA use. The Board approved the purchase of 12 red tablecloths at $9.00 each and 2 dozen plates at about $28.00 a dozen. As a non-budget item, a member vote was required. Barbara moved to make these purchases. The vote carried.

Service Committee Chairman Sara Miskimins mentioned several opportunities:

·        Donations will be accepted at the luncheon to cover the $75.00 cost of the notebooks and supplies she purchased for students at Dan D. Rogers Elementary School. This school, which has received an Exemplary rating, is the one we supported last year.

·        Keep in mind that the North Texas Food Bank most always needs volunteers. Twelve are needed for Wednesday, September 7th.

·        September 11th is our blood drive. So far 35 have signed up.

·        WDA will provide lunch for Hearts and Hammers on Saturday, September 17th. Donations and volunteer workers are both appreciated.

·        On September 18th at 10:00, the church’s Service Committee will present a program to be followed by their regular committee meeting.

·        WDA will sell holiday cards from the UUSC at the November Crafty Bake Sale. They are priced at 10 cards for $10.00.

·        Betty Schleier who’s in the hospital with a broken hip

·        Betty Sanders whose sister died

·        Vee Shine who is adjusting to her husband’s recent move to a nursing facility

·        Loyse Whisman who’s now at home with periodic home care

Publicity Chairman Nina Bell is ensuring that a WDA article is in each issue of the DU.

Telephone Chairman Vee Shine was not present; however, members without email were asked to let her know if they didn’t receive a call about the meeting.

·        The Help was recommended as a good movie to see.

The business meeting closed with a couple of reminders:

·        Irene Ellis said there are several handicapped parking spaces in the new lot.

·        President Calhoun reminded members of the special events taking place at church on Saturday and Sunday.

Second Vice President/Program Chairman Patty Jantho introduced our speaker, Charlise Hill- Larson, Director of Pastoral Care at First Unitarian. Charlise gave fascinating information about her search for a spiritual home and how Laurel Hallman played a part in her being a part of this church. In closing, Charlise announced a workshop on aging and dementia will be held at the church from 9:00 to 3:00 on Saturday, November 5th.

REPORTS OF BOARD AND COMMITTEES

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.

Secretary Yvonne Norfleet read the minutes of the April 5 meeting which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lenna Webb gave the treasurer’s report. Income from April 5
through May 3 was $415. Expenses, that included donations, from the same period were $2,138.65.

Lenna announced for Judy Smith the request for all members to fill out a
new form when paying their $25 dues.

She then presented Joan with a certificate of appreciation for her years of
service to WDA.

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked the hostesses for the day’s Pot

Luck luncheon: Jo Hoge, Marilyn Neustadt, Dee Sligar, and Mickey Nunn.

President Joan Janak then conducted the Installation of Officers, eliciting promises of service from the officers and support from the members.

After the short installation, the new president Kathy Calhoun spoke. Kathy explained that she had joined the WEA in the late 90s and then the WDA three years ago. She will be helping with the UU General Assembly in Charlotte, North Carolina this summer.

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn introduced Elaine Wildman, a charter member of the Unitarian Church in Oak Cliff. She is the person who introduced Edna Davis to the book Infidel which is Edna’s topic for her presentation today.

The group then sang Happy Birthday to Mary Lou Hopkins whose birthday is May 3.

Second Vice-President Patty Jantho paid tribute to Sarah McGrath for bringing inspirational speakers to the WDA general meetings for several years and to Edna Davis for her many acts of kindness. She asked members to submit to her ideas for next year’s programs.

Service Chair Sara Miskimins announced that she had taken WDA’s donations to Easter baskets to Community Partners and that she planned to make a donation of composition journals again to Dan D. Rogers Elementary School at the beginning of the new school year.

Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile announced that the Peter Rabbit's Flower Village runs through July 31 at the Arboretum. There are Thursday evening concerts. She also announced events at the Performing Arts Center and the West End.

Luncheon Chair for 2011-2012 Barbara Powell asked for members who had not volunteered to be hostesses for the coming year to please do so.

PROGRAM:
Second Vice-President Patty Jantho then introduced Edna Davis who gave a brilliant review of the book Infidel accompanied with slides of the author and the places where she was born and the places along her journey to freedom.

The group adjourned at 12:00 for the Pot Luck luncheon in Channing Hall.

REPORTS OF BOARD AND COMMITTEES

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.

Secretary Yvonne Norfleet read the minutes of the March 1 meeting which were approved as read.

Treasurer Lenna Webb presented the budget for 2011-2012, copies of which were distributed for members to read. Lenna pointed out that the Book Sale netted $794.50, which included the $160 from the books taken by Lenna and her husband to Half Price Books. currently WDA has $2,291.86 in the bank.  Concerns from members included question concerning the discrepancy
reported regarding WDA lunches (answer: WDA pays for the lunches of ministers), what constitutes Administration (answer: printing of the yearbook and pamphlet) memorial service (answer: people in charge of memorial services can ask for payment). Melissa Rice moved to accept the budget as presented; Ginny Lombardi seconded. The motion passed unanimously.

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn announced the April birthday of Susan Gundy. She urged members to pay their $25 dues early and to update their personal information.

Service Chair Sara Miskimins asked members who brought donations for the Easter baskets being prepared by Community Partners to put them on the back table; she will be taking them after the luncheon.

Second Vice-President Patty Gantt reported that Edna Davis will be the speaker for the May meeting.

The next meeting of the Friendship Circle, April 19 will be held at the home of Ginny Lombardi.

Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile announced that the Arboretum spring event would end April 10, but will still be beautiful all month. She also reported that a walking tour is held in the Arts District the first Saturday of every month starting at the Nasher and that there is a good exhibit at the Museum of Art.

Joan added the information that on April 21 from 10 till noon Scott Burns would be at the Temple Emmanuel. A donation of $10 is suggested.

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked the hostesses for the day’s catered luncheon: Edna Davis, Hannelore Daniel and Sarah McGrath. They provided table decorations celebrating Easter. Next month’s committee is: Jo Hoge, Marilyn Neustadt, Dee Sligar, and Paula Rose.

Edna Davis reported that Mary Lou Hopkins is improving. She is in Room 313 of the Skilled Nursing facility of C.C. Young.

Joan asked for the election of officers, the slate having been presented in the minutes. Genie Fritz moved to accept the slate, Alma Ayers seconded the motion which carried unanimously.

Lenna announced that next month will be Joan Janak’s last meeting. She and her husband are moving to South Carolina to be near their daughter. Kathy Calhoun announced that there would be a Bon Voyage party Wednesday, April 27 from 2-4.

Second Vice-President Patty Jantho introduced Kathleen Cunningham who presented a slide show and talk about the Dallas Arboretum: The Diamond in Dallas. Ms. Cunningham passed out brochures offering a 10% discount for memberships.

REPORTS OF BOARD AND COMMITTEES

President, Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. after,reading an anonymous prayer.

Secretary The minutes of the January 4 meeting were read and approved.


First Vice-President Jana Blackburn announced that WDA has 60
members. March birthdays were announced: today is Martha Popkess’ and last Sunday was Sara Miskimins’. Sara introduced her visitor, Karen Hugo.

Service Chair Sara Miskimins asked members to bring to the April 5
meeting items for the Easter baskets that Community Partners will be giving to young people. Sara mentioned the following service activities: North Dallas Shared Ministries’ Auction, White Rock Clean-up,WDA Book Sale, UU Blood Drive, Tutors at Dan D. Rogers, Workers at the North Texas Food Bank
Next Tuesday a group is leaving at 7 A.M. by bus to go to Austin to lobby for Planned Parenthood. The cost is $20 for the bus, a lunch and a snack. Dr. Kanter will be part of the group. Sara then mentioned matinee plays at the Bath House. If there are 5 people in a group, the cost if $10 apiece. Sara will have a sheet for sign-up in Channing Hall for those interested.

Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile announced the following local events:
* The Arboretum Spring Festival will be held from Mar. 5 - Apr. 10. The theme this year is:
Fairy Tale Castles
* Scheherazade is on Tues. Mar. 15 at the Meyerson Symphony
* Diana Ross will be at the Majestic Theatre on Wed. March 2.
* Choctaw Oklahoma has big celebrations every Tuesday, especially on Fat Tuesday
Peggy also recommended a book which is very appropriate for this National Women in History Month: Standing Before Us: Unitarian Universalist Women and Social Reform1776-1936, available in our church library.

Martha Durst announced for Social Chair Marge Niemann that the Friendship Circle would meet on March 15 at ll:00. Those attending are asked to bring a sandwich, the hostesses will provide salad, dessert and drink.

President Joan Janak stated that the board had recommended that WDA pay $300 for the new window coverings in Channing Hall since WDA members are the ones who benefit most from them. Lenna moved that WDA authorize the payment, Barbara Powell seconded; the motion passed unanimously.

Joan then passed out ballots for members to choose two organizations to receive the $300 each for WDA’s charitable donations. The group chose Planned Parenthood and North Dallas Shared Ministries.

Treasurer Lenna Webb reported a balance of $3,130.36. She asked for members to sign up to help with the book sale; a sheet will be available in Channing during lunch.

PROGRAM:
Second Vice-President Patty Jantho announced programs for April, Kathleen Cunningham discussing the Dallas Arboretum and May, Edna Davis reviewing the book Infidel.
She then introduced a church member and professor at UT Arlington who spoke on "Sustainability, Climate Change and You: A Look at the Facts and Your Future".

The group adjourned at 12:00 for the catered luncheon in Channing Hall.

REPORTS OF BOARD AND COMMITTEES

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.

Secretary The minutes of the December meeting were read and approved, although

Jeanne Clinchy wanted to add that Sarah McGrath’s birthday is December 25, not
mentioned in the minutes nor in the December meeting.

President Joan reported that the final total from the Crafty Bake Sale is $719.50.


Treasurer’s Report was given by Pamela Townsend ; she stated that the WDA

balance as of November 30, 2010 was $2,598.86. Treasurer Lenna Webb has had
surgery on her knee and is on the mend but still not able to attend WDA meetings.

President Joan again brought up the issue of the WDA buying shades for Channing

Hall at the cost of $570. Questions about the shades resulted in the decision to table
the issue again and to ask Chris Denny to give details regarding the shades at the
next meeting.

Joan reported for Sara Miskimins, Service Chair, that she took $115 to

Rainbow Room and that she, Kathy Warner, Irene Ellis and Shams Cohen were
given a tour of the facility. Sara would like to know if the WDA wants to help Rainbow
Room again this spring. She also reported that visiting to shut-ins was completed.

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn introduced Elaine Mickey as a new member

and stated that the WDA now has 60 members.

There was no one present with a January birthday.


Nina Bell announced the need to start collecting books for the spring Book Sate to be

held Sunday, March 27.

Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile announced the following local events: Tom Landry’s

Personal Collection at the Hall of State, the Tibet exhibit at the Crow Asian Museum,
the Alexander Calder Exhibit at the Nasher Sculpture Garden, and the El Greco
Pentecost Exhibit on loan from the Prado in Madrid at the SMU Meadows Museum.
President Joan announced that the nominating committee will soon be meeting.
She urged members to give thought to serving in some way. Everyone should serve on the luncheon committee as anyone can set a table; no one is compelled to
decorate.

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked the hostesses for the day’s catered
luncheon: Alma Ayers, Marjorie Niemann, and Barbara Powell. They provided silver
decorations for a New Year’s theme.
Next month’s committee is: Nina Bell, Paulette Cooper, and Sue Moyer.
Because of Sue’s injury and the probability that she cannot serve, Kathy asked for
someone to volunteer to take her place. Ann Harrell volunteered.
It was brought up that only 19 responded to the email about attendance at the
day’s luncheon. Some said that they had not received the email.

PROGRAM:
Second Vice-President Sarah McGrath introduced Alice Barnett who presented a
video of the work being done in the Vogel Alcove, explained her role there as a
lawyer and volunteer, gave an overview of what the Alcove does and then answered
members’ questions.

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.


Secretary The minutes of the November meeting were read and approved.


There was no treasurer’s report as Lenna Webb was not able to be present.


First Vice-President Jana Blackburn introduced one visitor, Elaine Mickey, the
mother of Bruce Mickey, a member of our church.


The only member present with a birthday in December was Edna Davis.


Second Vice-President Sarah McGrath announced that the January meeting will
feature Alice Barnett discussing the work of the Vogel Alcove.


Service Chair Sara Miskimins announced that she would be making a trip to the
Rainbow Room following the meeting so that she needed to have all donations by
then. Any checks should be made to Community Partners of Dallas.


Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile reported that the Arboretum was featuring 500 Santa
Clauses and that the exhibit goes through New Year’s Eve.


Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked the hostesses for the day’s potluck
luncheon, Judy Smith, Yvonne Norfleet and Jana Blackbur who decorated the tables
with a Teddy Bear theme. She reminded Alma Ayers, Marjorie Niemann, and
Barbara Powell that they were hostesses for the January luncheon .


President Joan Janak announced that the WDA made $694.50 from the Crafty Bake
Sale. She thanked all who contributed baked goods and crafts and those who
helped organize and those who helped in the selling.


She then reported that Chris Denney had found shades for Channing Hall at
WDA’s request. The cost is $570. Discussion followed as to ways to avoid the sun in
people’s eyes without incurring expense. The issue was tabled.

PROGRAM:
Sarah McGrath introduced Marcia Cooper who gave a book review of Bel Canto
and Sadie McCollum who played the piano and sang to portray the main character of
the book, an opera singer. Sarah said the program was in honor of Francine
Burrows.

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.


Secretary The minutes of the October meeting were read and approved.


Second Vice-President Sarah McGrath announced that the December meeting will

feature Opera Amid Crisis and Bel Canto as stated in the yearbook.

Service Chair Sara Miskimins passed out the “wish list” from the Rainbow Room and

asked that members bring their donations to the December 7 general meeting.
She also asked for help with the delivery of poinsettias to homebound
members.

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked the hostesses for the day’s luncheon, Irene

Ellis, Pamela Townsend and Kathy Warner who decorated the tables in festive fall
items. She reminded members that the December luncheon will be potluck. The
committee for that luncheon consists of Judy Smith, Lenna Webb, Yvonne Norfleet
and Jana Blackburn..

President Joan Janak reminded members that the Crafty Bake Sale takes place

Sunday November 21. Members are asked to bring their donations to the church on
Saturday, November 20 from 1 - 3. The donations are to be marked with yellow dots
and she brought some with her that can be picked up in Channing Hall.

Member Paulette Cooper shared a description of the multicultural Halloween Party

she had at her house as an example of a peaceful gathering.

PROGRAM:

Patty Jantho introduced the speaker Mary Overton, a church member, who spoke of
the Unitarian participation in the 65 year-old United Nation. She emphasized that no
one should doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the
world.

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.


Members were reminded that the cost for lunch will now be $10, the first

price change in a number of years. The confusion about the luncheon
reservation number published in the DU has been corrected. Members
were again urged to pick up the annual Directory.

Secretary The minutes of the September meeting were approved as

read.

Treasurer Lenna Webb reported a bank balance of $3,816.42. She has

filed the appropriate forms to the Church Auction Committee submitting
sale of the WDA-owned cemetery plots as auction items.

Co-Second Vice President Patty Jantho announced Mary Overton as

the November speaker who will discuss The UU and the UN.
Member Genie Fritz reminded us that early voting runs from October 18
through 29 and offered to provide League of Women Voters, Voters
Guides for interested members.

First VP Membership Jana Blackburn’s report was given by Sara

Miskimins. We have 59 paid members. Susan Brewer and Mary GIlmore
were guests at today’s meeting. Jeanne Clinchy’s October birthday was
acknowledged.

Service Chair Sara Miskmins brought thank you letters from Rogers

Elementary fourth graders to be read by members. Rogers Elementary
obtained their Exemplary rating from the PTA. Rainbow Room was
explained as being a part of the Community Partners of Dallas and not as
a separate entity. It acts as a store for clothing supplies for babies
through children aged 18. The category for our December gift items will
be decided at the November meeting. She will circulate a sign up list for
people willing to deliver poinsettias to home bound members and to
review the list of people to be visited. She listed the multiple community
service opportunities being offered by the Church.

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked today’s hosteses, Peggy

Cargile, Karen McClendon and Betty Sanders.

Community Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile’s list of local cultural attractions

included the following: the Arboretum, whose pumpkin display ends Nov.
14; the State Fair ending Oct. 17, Current Tibetan exhibit at the Crow
Gallery; sculpture display, The Mourners, at the DMA.

Publicity Barbara Powell indicated the the current WDA luncheon

reservation number listed in the DU is correct. If you are not receiving either a
telephone call or an email notice about the upcoming WDA luncheon,
please let the Board know,

Friendship Circle Social Chair Marge Niemann reported that the next

meeting will be on Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. here in Channing Hall. Each person
is reminded to bring a sandwich.

PROGRAM:

Sara McGrath introduced 1st U Church Member John Mears, professor of
political science at SMU to discuss Significant Issues in the November
Elections. He indicated that short range political prospects for this
country are not favorable but that long range, (meaning decades), the
people will demand practical solutions from the politicians and a different
world balance will evolve. The country currently is in denial and is not
receiving leadership from the politicians. Leadership will ultimately come
from the people motivated by the pain they feel and the changes they will
demand as a consequence.

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.  

 

Secretary The minutes of the April meeting were read; then approved as corrected.

 

Treasurer Pamela Townsend reminded members that if they want to be included in the yearbook they must have paid their dues.by the end of May.  She then reported a cash balance of $2,659.24

 

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn announced that to date there are 32 paid members and reminded everyone that the dues are $25.

 

President Joan Janak informed the group that the ministers’ wives were sent invitations to attend today’s meeting and pot-luck luncheon.

 

Friendship Circle Social Chair Marge Niemann reported that the next event would be held at Ginny Lombardi’s house.

 

Member Martha Durst announced that in July on fourTuesdays theTemple Emanu-El will feature special cinemas for $4 each with free popcorn and lemonade.

 

New Service Chair Sara Miskimins passed out a survey, asking members to please fill it out indicating the type of services they think the WDA should undertake and which ones they would be willing to participate in.  She asked that the completed surveys be returned to her at the end of the luncheon.

 

Community Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile announced the following events:  Beatrice Potter exhibit at the Arboretum, King Charles IV at the Meadows Museum at SMU, and the Lens of Impressionism at the Dallas Museum of Art.

 

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked Marilyn Newstadt, Marjorie Niemann, Elsa North and Virginia Sanders for the “May Flowers” decorations in Channing Hall.  She asked that each member sign up to be a hostess for the coming year.

 

President Joan Janak gave a brief history of the WDA.  Then Edna Davis conducted a ceremony to install the new officers, written by Rona Mears.  After the installation the old staff was acknowledged and thanked for their service.

         

PROGRAM:

Sarah McGrath introduced the speaker Tina Flanders who presented Tips on Exercising & Nutrition.  Ms.  Flanders then led the group in some simple exercises.

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.  

 

Chris Denny, the church’s Chief Administrative Officer, began the meeting by making announcements.  First, regarding the pictorial directory:  members of the church are asked to sign up to have their photos taken in May or June.  Second, regarding the church’s movement toward paperless reporting by late May:  both the DU and quarterly statements will be sent electronically.  To have copies of either sent by mail will require signing requests.

 

Secretary The minutes of the March meeting were read; then approved as corrected.

 

Treasurer Pamela Townsend reported that the Book Sale netted $536.26.  She sent $100 from the WDA to the church’s youth group, $200 to the church.  In all the WDA contributed $3,500 to community and church, leaving a balance of $2,352. 24.

          Pamela then passed out copies of the proposed budget for the 2010-11 year.  A motion was made and seconded to accept the budget as presented; the motion carried unanimously.

 

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn announced that Judy Smith’s husband was our only guest for the day.  She then reported the death of member, Francine Burrow.

Also she stated that Martha Popkess was scheduled for surgery.

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun announced that the “Spring Fling” decorations in Channing Hall were provided by Jeanne Clinchy, Edna Davis, Karen McClendon and Carolyn Saunders.  In May for the pot luck luncheon Marilyn Newstadt, Marjorie Niemann, Elsa North and Virginia Sanders will be in charge.

 

Service Chair Kathy Warner stated  that as visits to shut-ins at Christmas were so pleasant, her committee has plans to make visits again in the spring.  She passed a list around to allow members to write names of people needing such visits.

          Kathy then thanked the board for stuffing eggs for the church’s Easter Egg Hunt at their meeting in March.

          She plans a service committee meeting after today’s lunch.

          She reiterated Chris Denny’s request for all members of the church to sign up for photos, emphasizing that members will receive free an 8 x 10 photo as well as a copy of the directory.  The last directory was in 1989, so it is definitely time for a new one.

 

President Joan Janak reminded all that WDA dues of $25 are to be paid by May. 

 

Publicity Chair Barbara Powell explained that errors regarding the WDA in the March DU were not hers, but she is confident that with the return of Suzi Hall to her job following maternity leave there will be no future problems.

 

President Joan Janak announced that “thank-you” notes from the church’s youth group and the Texas Equal Access Fund have been received.

          She then turned the program over to second vice president,Lenna Webb,

 

PROGRAM:

Lenna Webb passed out copies of “Focus on Health Reform.”  She then introduced Michael Lee, a Dallas attorney and member of the OFA, Organizing For America , who spoke on the recent passage of legislation of health reform and answered members’ questions.

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun complimented the day’s hostesses, Marla Beikman, Alice Johnson and Martha Durst, for the lovely spring daffodils adorning the luncheon tables.  She asked for volunteers to help Jeanne Clinchy for the April luncheon.

 

Book Sale Chair Nina Bell passed around a sign-up sheet for help setting up the Book Sale on Friday and Saturday, March 12 and 13 preceding the Sale on Sunday, March 14.

 

President Joan Janak then said that she had received thank-you’s from the organizations to whom WDA donations had been made and that she would place them on the table in the back for all to see.

 

 

PROGRAM:

Joan then introduced member Patty Jantho who is the author of the Readers Theater Play presented.  The title of the play is We Hold These Truths.  Patty wrote a stirring play recounting the difficulties of women’s obtaining suffrage and exhorted listeners to continue in the fight for women’s rights.

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.  

 

Secretary Because of the secretary’s absence at the January meeting and the misplacement of the notes taken by the substitute, there were no minutes to be read.

 

Treasurer Pamela Townsend reported a balance of $4,953.98 after the payment of one donation and one to the January speaker.

 

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn announced that there were no visitors.

 

Second Vice-President Sarah McGrath asked members to email her any ideas for programs.

 

Community Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile announced a special exhibit at the Nasher Sculpture Garden.  For February’s National Black History Month the museum at the Old Red Courthouse there is an exhibit Black Dallas 1949 - 1961 and one at the Lakewood Library.  The Women’s Museum is featuring 25 women artists.

 

Publicity Chair Barbara Powell needs information regarding the Book Sale to submit to the DU.  Substituting for Kathy Calhoun, she thanked the hostesses who made decorations from Where the Wild Things Are:  Carolyn Sanders, Judy Smith and Lenna Webb.  She announced the hostesses for March:  Marla Beikman, Alice Johnson and Martha Durst.

 

President Joan Janak then asked the members to look at the information regarding organizations to which WDA might make donations and to mark their ballots.  The board had voted to donate $3,000, with $1,000 going to each of the top 3 organizations chosen.  Last year WDA gave $900 to the church, $300 to North Dallas Shared Ministry, $300 to Family Place, $300 to Girls, Inc., and $200 to the campaign of Laurel Hallman.   A separate donation of $100 is to be given to Texas Equal Access.

 

Jeanne Clinchy moved to amend the budget of $600 for donations to allow $3,000 contributions this year.  Alice Johnson seconded.  The motion passed.

 

On February 14 the church will hold a ULink Fair.  WDA needs members to be at a table to hand out brochures regarding our organization.

 

The Book Sale is to be March 14, so it is time to get it organized.

 

Joan announced that the board had decided that the two ministers of the church should be treated each month to our catered luncheons.

 

 

PROGRAM:

Lenna Webb introduced Karen Blessen, a free lance artist, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and cofounder of Today Marks the Beginning.  Ms. Blessen displayed the book Peace One Day and slides of the work with children to further the peace movement.

REPORTS OF BOARD AND COMMITTEES

 

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m.   She called on Edna Davis to report on the condition of Martha Popkess who was seriously injured in a fall.  Martha is in Baylor Hospital and is expected to be there for some time.  Martha Durst expressed concern for Nina Bell who has been ill with an infection.

 

Secretary Yvonne Norfleet read the minutes of the November 3 meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

 

Treasurer Pamela Townsend reported a balance of $4,382.48; this balance does not reflect the proceeds from the Crafty Bake Sale.

 

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn introduced one visitor, Alice Link, and announced that WDA has 62 members to date.

 

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked her committee for December and announced the committee for January.  She expressed the importance of responding to either a phone call or e-mail so that she knows how many tables will be needed.  Those who want to change from the e-mail list to the phone list need to contact Nelda Davis.  Kathy then announced the Southwest UU Women’s Conference to be held in February in Dallas.  She will distribute flyers to all who are interested in the details.

 

President Joan Janak then thanked Genie Fritz for taking over the bridge group after the resignation of Ann Wilbur.

 

Service Chair Kathy Warner thanked all those who contributed to the success of the Crafty Bake Sale.  She said checks could be made for contributions to both Community Partners of Dallas who support the Rainbow Room and Youth Village Foundation.  Those who brought items for these organizations were to put them on a table in Channing Hall and Kathy would get them to their locations.  She asked for one more volunteer to bake cookies for the Youth Village on Wednesday, December 9.  To tutor at Youth Village one must undergo their training.  Kathy also asked for volunteers to tutor at Preston Hollow Elementary and she reminded the group that Karen Lewis would still like help with the closets in the RE building.  She then asked for names of people who should receive poinsettias and a visit from WDA members.

 

President Joan Janak announced proceeds from the Crafty Bake Sale of a little over $1,000.  Kathy Calhoun is responsible for a handsome portion by contributing beautiful knitted scarves.

 

Edna Davis emphasized how worthwhile the project of taking poinsettias to shut-ins is and asked for volunteers to go in pairs to deliver them.  If enough people were to volunteer, all the visits could be made in a day.

 

PROGRAM:

Patty Jantho introduced our own Music director, Donald Krehbiel, with a glowing list of his accomplishments, including founding the Orpheus Chamber Singers.  Don gave the group insight into his personal life, how he came to the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, the status of choirs in the world, and then played excerpts of songs showing a diverse background of cultures dating back to the 1600’s

President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.  

 

Secretary Yvonne Norfleet read the minutes of the September 1 meeting. The minutes were approved as corrected.

 

Treasurer Pamela Townsend reported 62 paid members and a balance of $4,443.98.

 

First Vice-President Jana Blackburn introduced one visitor.

 

Service Chair Kathy Warner used props to introduce the many service projects proposed by her committee who believes that the WDA should continue doing what it is already doing, such as Jeanne Clinchy’s work at coordinating meals for ailing members.  Projects proposed to be continued are contributions to Rainbow Room and Youth Village.  People with organizational skills are asked to help Karen Lewis by cleaning and organizing the Religious Education closets. Anyone with ideas for service were asked to meet with Kathy after the luncheon.

 

Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked her committee for November:  Nina Bell, Peggy Cargile and Sue Moyer, filling in for Sarah McGrath. The December meeting will feature a pot-luck luncheon.

 

President Joan Janak called on Genie Fritz who has received a letter from the Southwest Credit Union (which is a special credit union for women).  The organization is asking for WDA support.

 

Joan then reminded members of the Crafty Bake Sale which will be held the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 22.  She announced that she had placed a sign-up sheet on each table in Channing Hall.

 

She then called on Sara Miskimins who explained a movie outing to be held after Friendship Circle each month.  Sara handed out a flyer with details.  She also has a book project in mind; she asked for contributions:  an explanation of how you found your way to Unitarian faith.

 

PROGRAM:

Lenna Webb first welcomed Sarah McGrath who was back after her fall.  She then introduced the speaker Dallas ACLU Board Member, Carol Jablonski, filling in for Anne Shuttee, who was called out of town on business.  The program featured a video presentation in addition to the talk about the current focus of the ACLU in Dallas and the nation.

The minutes were approved as corrected.
 
Treasurer Pamela Townsend reported 58 paid members and a balance of
$4,747.25.
 
First Vice-President Jana Blackburn introduced two new members and one visitor.
 
Second Vice-President Lenna Webb handed out a page of additions and
corrections to the directory.
 
Service Chair Kathy Warner announced her committee of Jo Hoge, Sara
Miskimins, and Alma Ayers and said she would welcome anyone else interested.
 
Social Chair Ann Wilbur announced Tuesday, October 13 as the next date
for bridge.  Anyone interested in a refresher course should contact her.
 
Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun thanked her committee for October, David
Hannelore, Jo Hoge and Dee Sligar.  The November 3 will be the next
catered lunch.  A  replacement for Sarah McGrath will be needed to help
Nina Bell and Peggy Cargile with that luncheon.
 
President Joan Janak announced the Crafty Bake Sale which will be held
the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 22.  Joan will need some help
with this event.  Members can help by labeling their contributions with
the name of the organization and the price.
She then announced the Book Sale for March 12, another event where
members should volunteer to help.
 
Telephone Chair Nelda Davis explained that she must notify the caterer
for luncheons in a timely manner and that the Friday before the
luncheon is the deadline for making reservations.  She calls in the
number of reservations to Kathy Calhoun, Luncheon Chair.
Second Vice-President Lenna Webb reported that Sarah McGrath has
injured two vertebrae in her neck.  Edna Davis has been active in
helping care for her.  Jeanne Clinchy who coordinated taking meals to
members in need said that she has yet to be contacted about providing
meals for Sarah.  Lenna stressed the importance of supplying her with
e-mail addresses in order for her to get the word out quickly regarding
special needs of members.
 
PROGRAM:
Lenna Webb introduced speaker Dr. Ravi Batra, an economics professor at
SMU and author of five bestsellers.  Dr. Batra spoke of his new book
The New Golden Age and answered questions from members.
 
The group adjourned at 12:00 for the catered luncheon in Channing Hall.

REPORTS OF BOARD AND COMMITTEES
 
President Joan Janak called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.   She
announced that the WDA would have a table at the In-Gathering on Sunday
13 and she needed some members to be at the table.   Pamela Townsend
had already volunteered.  Barbara Powell also agreed to help.  The
table will be stocked with brochures about the WDA and will include the
web address.
 
Second Vice-President Lenna Webb gave an overview of the new WDA web
site.  It is linked to the church web site.  There one can find the
names of officers, their e-mail addresses, the dates of the luncheons
and the programs, a membership application and information about the
bridge group and friendship circle.
 
Secretary Yvonne Norfleet read the minutes of the May 5 meeting written
by former secretary, Kathy Warner.  The minutes were approved as read.

Service Chair Kathy Warner said that she would like to have a committee
working with her to make a group effort.
 
Liaison Chair Peggy Cargile announced that the State Fair of Texas
would open at the end of the month and that there is a Diego Rivera
exhibit at the Meadows Museum.  She also thanked the WDA for their
caring concern at the death of her husband and a special thanks to
Lenna Webb for getting the word out to members.
 
Publicity Chair Barbara Powell had no report.
 
Luncheon Chair Kathy Calhoun announced that all the hostesses have been
set for the year and are listed in the yearbook.
 
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND FURTHER BUSINESS:
 
Pamela Townsend, one of the hostesses for the September luncheon,
announced that the school supplies used as table decorations would be
donated to Obadiah Knight Elementary School.
 
Joan informed the members that the church staff will be invited to all
the pot luck luncheons.
 
Directory chair Judy Smith asked that any corrections to the yearbook
be reported to her.
 
Genie Fritz announced that the bridge group would meet on the next
Tuesday.  Someone asked if there were bridge lessons available.  Yvonne
Norfleet offered to give lessons if there were at least 3 women
interested.  Edna Davis said she had purchased Mar Jon tiles in her
recent trip to the Far East and would bring them on bridge day if there
were at least 3 others interested in learning how to play.
 
Kathy Calhoun reported that she did not receive the number of attendees
for the day’s luncheon.  Lenna Webb said that members with e-mail
addresses had received notices and the number of  those who responded
was given to Nelda Davis.  Lenna emphasized the importance of e-mail
addresses and asked that anyone who had not given her address to please
do so.
 
PROGRAM:
 
Sarah McGrath introduced speaker Aaron White, our church’s new
assistant minister.  Rev. White spoke about his background and then
asked for questions.
 
The group adjourned at 23:00 for the potluck luncheon in Channing Hall.
